[ARCHIVED] Inspiring story: "Doin' Good in the 'Hood---helping neighbors

Doin' Good in the 'Hood is an inspiring group of neighbors are bring smiles to those who are less fortunate

Erica Razek  and some neighbors are doing lots of good things. She started a group last year that provides help to those who need it the most.  Be inspired by her kindness and efforts and read the nice testimonial from Dobbs Ferry Food Pantry.  An inspiring group of neighbors who bring smiles to those who are having a difficult time.

Started in October 2020, Doin' Good in the 'Hood was started as an effort to collect needed items for a variety of groups that directly service people and animals affected by the Pandemic. We are a group of "neighbors" on Nextdoor.com who gather and distribute resources once or twice per month to those who need it most.

As the founder of the group, my idea was to research and communicate with charities, food banks and shelters to deliver specifically needed items. The need is then posted on the group page with details regarding contact free pickup. Pickups are done by private message with location and then deleted for donor privacy afterward.

So far, Doin' Good in the 'Hood has completed the following:

5 car loads of food to Dobbs Ferry Food Pantry
Carload of diapers and wipes to United Baptist Church in White Plains
1 carload of used blankets/towels, dog and cat food and toys to Yonkers Animal Shelter
1 carload of same to Paws Crossed
1 carload of same to Westchester County Animal Shelter
17 men's coats and boots to St. Bartholomew soup kitchen consumers
1 carload of toys to Greenburgh Health Center
65 "thank you" gifts to staff at Greenburgh Health Center
40 toiletry packs to Jan Peek House in Peekskill

The group has 250 members so far, but all of this was accomplished by a core group of about 25 consistent donors. I encourage anyone interested to join us and those who have already joined to donate! Please click on the group link at https://nextdoor.com/g/kw8q88xwt/

A HUGE thank you to the regular donors who have accomplished so much in 5 short months.

:Paul, the Dobbs Ferry Food Pantry has seen demand for our services skyrocket.  In the past we used to serve around 35 families a week; now we're averaging 120.

Thankfully, we have a responsive community who supports our calls for help.
One organization I'd like to bring to your attention is Doin' Good in the Hood, headed by Erica Razek. Using the neighborhood.com/NextDoor app and email, this group of 250 members has donated many carloads full of wonderful goods to our food pantry when we needed it most.
On weekends, Erica tirelessly drives around Greenburgh for hours, collecting donations of food, diapers, toys, coats and more to support not only our Pantry but also the Greenburgh Health Center, Unity Baptist, Jan Peek House in Peekskill, St. Bartholomew's Mission and more.
