[ARCHIVED] cricket is so popular that Westchester is now funding a new cricket field

Greenburgh was the first locality in Westchester to promote cricket as a sport. Delighted that Westchester is recognizing the importance of the game. Hope other communities will follow

CRICKET EXPANDING IN WESTCHESTER   -GREENBURGH WAS FIRST--SPORT SO POPULAR WESTCHESTER IS NOW FUNDING A NEW FIELD

In 2019 Greenburgh became the first community in Westchester to offer residents the opportunity to enjoy cricket --one of the most popular sports in the world. We created a field at Richard Presser Park in Hartsdale. It's been enormously popular. The problem: The demand is so great that we can't serve  everyone who wants to use the field.
I am very pleased that County Executive George Latimer and County Legislator Mary Jane Shimsky of Greenburgh have championed the cause. The 2021 county capital budget includes $1 million for a new field in Westchester.
I hope that other communities will also create cricket field opportunities. A statement from Legislator Shimsky follows. I am also forwarding a link to an interview I had with some of the founders of the Greenburgh cricket field in 2019:

STATEMENT FROM COUNTY LEGISLATOR MARY JANE SHIMSKY

One of local government’s most important roles is insuring that all of our residents have the recreational opportunities they need – recreation that allows our people to live healthy and happy lives, and to learn skills, such as teamwork and grit, that are important to success off the playing field as well. With interest in cricket growing throughout Westchester, I’m very pleased that the County included $1 million in its 2021 capital budget for a new field. I’d like to thank County Executive Latimer for all of the interest he has shown in making this project become a reality, and all of my colleagues on the Board of Legislators for their support. Thank you to Supervisor Feiner as well, for showing with the field at Richard Presser Park that, if you build it, cricket teams will come and play on it. Most of all, thank you to the citizen advocates who alerted officials on all levels of government to the need for cricket facilities in our community.
