SECOND HALF OF SCHOOL TAXES DUE JANUARY 30TH.  The town acts as a collector of school taxes even though the school districts are independent of the town government.  The 2nd half of your school taxes are due by the end of the month.  You can pay your taxes online or by credit card (there is a nominal fee if you use the credit card).  Info on the website (check Receiver of Taxes department).


BUILDING DEPARTMENT INFORMATION THAT COULD BE USEFUL.  As a resident of the town of Greenburgh this summary is to go over some of the Building Department responsibilities. This department issues building permits as well as enforcing the building codes and zoning ordinance of the Town. The Building Department does take an active approach to enforcing the building and zoning ordinances. Below is a list of common issues that new residents and even residents that have live in the Town for many years:


  • Building without a permit – many residents do not realize that a building permit may be required for most building activities. The reason for building permits is for your safety as well as others and it will also check that you are in compliance with the Zoning Ordinance. Examples of projects the required permits are additions, decks, pools, sheds, patios and driveways or driveway expansions to name a few.
  • Electrical and plumbing permits – Working on these systems can be dangerous and a permit will be required from a licenses trade professional to work on them.
  • Parking – Parking on private residential property is allowed in an approved driveway. Parking is not allow on your lawn or other makeshift driveway. 
  • Fences – Although permits are not required for fences, but they must meet our zoning ordinance. 
  • Commercial vehicles & unregistered vehicles – These vehicles are not to be stored or parked in a driveway. The can be put in a garage or screened from view.

POLICE DEPARTMENT INFO THAT COULD BE HELPFUL.  Snow Parking Ordinance- between December 1 and March 15, parking is prohibited on all Town Roads (with the exception of Fieldstone Drive, Rockledge Road and the metered parking spaces on East Hartsdale Avenue and Columbia Avenue)

A Hardship Parking Exemption to the Snow Parking Ordinance is currently being instituted as a “Pilot-Program”. Residents may download the application at:

NEW TREE LAW TAKES EFFECT ON JANUARY 4TH.  The Town’s new Tree Ordinance entitled, “Trees, Community Management” is set to take effect January 4, 2021. Below are a few highlights:


·         The new law updates a 45 year old existing ordinance limited to regulating less than 10% of 

          Town properties;

·         It is consistent with the Town’s Comprehensive Plan and New York State Environmental 


·         The new law focuses on tree replacements, in a scientific and objective way;

·         It provides for reduced fees, and does not require landscape design professionals, in 

          connection with most homeowner tree removals;

·         It provides for limited or no pre-removal reviews for hazardous trees;

·         There are no replacement requirements when removing invasive species of trees; and

·         The Applicant/Property Owner selects replacement trees (when required).

FREE REFLECTORS.  During the past year a number of Greenburgh residents were hit by vehicles during the evening. Some lost their lives. It's possible that some of the deaths and accidents happened because motorists did not see the pedestrians walking.  We will be leaving free reflectors at the lobby of Greenburgh Town Hall, 177 Hillside Ave. Please encourage your friends and family to wear bright clothing, use flashlights and wear reflectors when walking at night. It's very difficult for motorists to observe pedestrians wearing dark clothing during the evening hours. And, it gets dark early. Also, if you have a pet put a reflector on your pet. 


DROP OFF LOCATIONS FOR BULK ITEMS.   The Department of Public Works will be placing dumpsters at several locations throughout Town, allowing residents to drop off bulk items during designated times over the next couple of weeks. These drop off sites will accept metal and non-metal bulk items. Residents must bring their license to show proof of residence. We will not be accepting e-waste (computers, TVs, printers, etc.), wet paint, hazardous materials, or construction debris.

 These dumpsters will only be at these locations From 7:30 am – 2:30 pm on the above listed dates.   

GREENBURGH DPW TO PICK UP E-WASTE - OLD TV'S, PRINTERS, COMPUTERS DURING WEEK OF JANUARY 11TH BY APPOINTMENT.  For first time ever the town DPW department will pick up e waste. You must make an appointment. In the past you had to bring the e waste to the highway garage yourself. We plan to pick up e waste a few times a year.
