[ARCHIVED] Virtual Chess offered by a great Greenburgh chess educator who taught many students could provide students with an opportunity to excel in chess

When I was growing up my mom always talked to me about her cousin, Arthur Bernard Bisguier,  who became an American chess grandmaster and was declared by the United States Chess Federation the "Dean of American Chess."  They lived near each other in the Bronx. This is a video of the game that made him famous:

I never took up Chess but remember being inspired by Arthur Bisguier's successes .."   And was always impressed with an activity that some consider a great "brain workout"  Chess helps students learn how to calculate, how to be creative in their thinking, how to anticipate consequences of decision makng among other things.

When I took office as Town Supervisor I got to know another person who was passionate about Chess: Jim Santorelli. Jim would tell me about his involvement with Greenburgh schools and how much he loved teaching children chess.  And, he took great pride in the competitions -his students winning prestigious competitions.

Jim now is offering residents a virtual chess program that I think some Greenburgh students and parents might be interested in.

Jim Santorelli, a USCF Candidate Master and nationally renowned authority on chess in education, is the Executive Director of Jim Virtual Chess Lessons. JVCL is an excellent low-cost remote learning activity aimed at improving a child’s critical thinking and executive functioning. Jim’s passion makes it fun!

Jim has taught chess in every elementary school in the Town of Greenburgh. Most notably, Jim was the “architect” for the successful Greenburgh Central 7 Schools chess program which continues to this day.

Jim coached the Woodlands Junior High School Chess Team to the 1996 USCF National JHS Championship. Jim continues to teach in chess programs in Westchester and Lower Connecticut.

When the pandemic hit in March 2020, Jim transitioned his successful in-school program to an immensely popular live-virtual platform. Partner with JVCL to bring back some sense of normalcy. To sign up, visit them on the web at

Contact Jim at 914.589.7325 or for more info.

An article in the NY Times national edition appears below about chess as a learning tool- mentioned Jim.
