The coronavirus pandemic has hit White Plains, Greenburghand every part of our community is suffering. Many are out of work and are isolated in their homes. Others are sick and dying, and far too many are now going hungry.
Grace/La Gracia Episcopal Church, has long been committed to fighting hunger in White Plains and residents of Greenburgh. In keeping with our long history of community involvement and outreach, we operate a soup kitchen providing meals every weekday to any hungry person regardless of their religion, race or nationality. In response to the coronavirus, we have now opened a food bank which distributes groceries every Thursday afternoon to anyone in need. Currently, over 200-300 persons are receiving food every week.
Our food distribution has been greatly assisted by Feeding Westchester which has been providing fresh fruits and vegetables. However, the need is far outpacing our supplies. Every week, we run out of food and have to turn away hungry families. It is heartbreaking not to be able to help everyone in need.
We need assistance from the community to continue this vital work. We need donations of any kind of food, particularly vegetables, canned goods, cereals, pasta. If you are unable to deliver, we will try to pick up anything that we can use. Our Latino community have been particularly hard hit by unemployment and financial distress so we would be particularly grateful for donations of rice and beans.
Food donations are readily accepted at our distribution location at 33 Church Street, White Plains, NY. Since the church is closed please contact, Fr. Adolfo Moronta to set up a time for the food to be dropped off. If it is not possible for the food to be dropped off, you may also feel free to call me to arrange for the pick-up of food donations. Financial donations are also welcome; please make your checks payable to Grace Episcopal Church, 33 Church Street, White Plains, NY 10601, with “Food Bank” written on the memo line.
