[ARCHIVED] Community walk on Longview to Underhill on Ft Hill

scheduled for December 7th at 11 AM to discuss sidewalk and other safety initiatives

YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN TOWN OFFICIALS  ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7TH AT 11 AM—TO REVIEW PROPOSAL FOR A SIDEWALK ON FORT HILL FROM LONGVIEW TO UNDERHILL AND TO DISCUSS OTHER SAFETY INITIATIVES

The tragic accident involving an Edgemont resident who was struck by a motor vehicle on Friday evening November 22 near the corner of Fort Hill Road and Underhill Road has encouraged all of us to think of ways to make our community safer for pedestrians. A police investigation is currently under review. I have been asked not to comment on the investigation until the investigation is completed.

Among safety suggestions for the area: constructing a sidewalk on Fort Hill Road from Longview to Underhill. This would enable students, commuters and other pedestrians to walk  more safely to their destination. On Saturday, December 7th at 11 AM town officials and I will be joined by the Commissioner of Public Works, and representatives of the traffic safety unit of the police department. We will conduct a walk from the corner of Ft Hill Road/Underhill to Longview. We will identify the obstacles that will have to be removed if a sidewalk is built, the steps that have to be taken by the town to make a sidewalk happen, a possible timetable  and other issues. The police will share their thoughts on other safety initiatives that could/should be taken.  We will also provide residents who join us with reflectors. One way to reduce the possibility of accidents: pedestrians, when walking at night, should wear bright clothing or reflectors. It’s difficult to see pedestrians crossing the street when it’s dark.

All the members of the Town Board are committed to making our community safe for pedestrians.
