Sixth grader Maya Barmecha is a student at the Greenville School in Edgemont. She’s also one of the youngest student activists and lobbyists in Greenburgh. On November 13th Maya attended a Greenburgh Town Board meeting and asked the Town Board to build a sidewalk on Fort Hill Road from Longview/Clarendon to Underhill Road.
If the Town Board agrees to this request pedestrians, students, commuters will be able to safely walk to Central Ave and to other locations. Maya told the Board that she is determined to get the sidewalk built and discusses, in this video, her lobbying strategy. If you reside near Ft Hill Road, please let us know what you think of her proposal. Would you like to assist her in her efforts to persuade town officials to fund the sidewalk?
It's important for students to get involved in the decision making processes of government and to learn how to be effective legislative advocates. Today’s sixth grader’s may be tomorrow’s Presidents, Governor’s, members of Congress, town officials and community leaders. Maya is an exceptionally talented young woman who will make a difference!
Greenburgh is always looking for ways to involve young people. We have a great internship program. Encourage students to host their own cable TV programs and produce public service announcements. And love it when students get involved in pursuing legislation. If you know a student who wants to get involved in making a difference in our community please e mail me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com.
