During the past six months, due in great part to the efforts of the "Saving Greenburgh Coalition," a great number of the residents of Greenburgh have become aware of the ongoing, now 7 year campaign, of the Edgemont Incorporation Committee to leave the Unincorporated Town, and incorporate Edgemont into a new and separate Village.
The efforts of the "Coalition" have been focused on educating and organizing Greenburgh residents around the issues related to the incorporation process and its inequities. Although a great number of our residents have gained new awareness, far too many remain with little or no knowledge of the 150 year history of the NYS law governing, the incorporation process, and the dramatic effects which incorporation would have on Greenburgh.
Most recently, an excellent, cogent and accurate review and explanation of the history, laws and issues related to NYS Village Incorporation has been published by Dr. Gerald Benjamin, a SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus, who has written extensively on state and local government in NYS. The link to the article is below: I strongly suggest that every resident of The Town of Greenburgh take the time to review this paper.
