[ARCHIVED] Tiles from 9-11 Memorial Wall Mural, Central Ave falling and will be removed

We want to preserve as many of the 1,800 ceramic tiles that were placed on the wall in 2003. About 80% of the tiles have completely detached. We will come up with a new plan to memorialize the victims of 9-11

In 2003 the Town of Greenburgh and the Westchester Arts Council (now Arts Westchester) collaborated together to establish a memorial in remembrance of the victims of the tragedy which befell our nation on September 11, 2001 at the Richard Presser Park on Central Avenue in Hartsdale.

The remembrance wall was built using about 1,800  ceramic tiles from an art workshop and was affixed to the wall and it was well received.  Unfortunately the tiles did not adhere to the wall long term and after 8 years or sooner they started to fall off.  About 11 years ago we reapplied as many tiles as possible that were not damaged back on the wall. Presently roughly 80% or more of the tiles have completely detached again from the wall and the only thing holding them together now are the grout around each tile.

Rather than wait for the tiles to come crashing down the Greenburgh Parks department has started to  remove the tiles in the and try to save as many tiles as possible.  They will be placed in crates until we can determine an action plan on what to do with them.  We will form a working group to review options with town officials, Arts Westchester, community members.  An artifact from the World Trade Center is also on the wall.

It's important that we never forget 9-11. We will come up with a permanent memorial plan and are very disappointed to report this news.
