Con Ed to put wires underground on Birchwood Lane Hartsdale as part of a test to reduce power outage

Con Ed to put wires underground on Birchwood Lane Hartsdale as part of a test to reduce power outages

I am thrilled!!! For many years I have asked Con Ed to put wires underground (see NY Times article link from 2006)--

https://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/24/nyregion/for-con-ed-it-may-be-time-to-go-underground.html

I had an excellent meeting with Con Ed officials yesterday and was advised that Con Ed will test out the concept on Birchwood Lane in Hartsdale. Birchwood is located near Ridge Road, has lots of trees and has many outages. If the test works it's possible that Con Ed will gradually put wires underground in other neighborhoods around town in the coming years. The underground work on Birchwood will start in September.  And, the work won't be completed till the end of March--weather permitting.

Over the years many elected officials (myself included) have complained about frequent power outages. We have testified at Public Service Commissions, appeared before hearings that the State Legislature has had.  And have asked that Con Ed try different approaches so residents will not have to experience major outages.  Seems like Con Ed is trying - and I am grateful that progress is being made.

Since 2019 Con Ed has completed projects designed to reduce outages--they have spent about 4.5 million dollars in Greenburgh. The undergrounding costs does not include this. They have also trimmed many trees, reducing the number of outages.

A letter will be sent to residents of Birchwood Lane and Richard Terrace next week by Con Ed. I will urge residents to support this important initiative.

The location of the underground work is below.

A list of projects that Con Ed has worked on is also listed below.

Thank you! If this experiment works and if placing wires underground makes sense --we could have fewer outages in the future and when there are outages they will be for fewer hours/days.  I feel that our voices are being heard.
