The Price of Hearth and Home Part III
By: Riley Wentzler & Felicia Barber
Few things are of higher importance to an individual than the: location, price, and safety of his/her home. This is why every ancient culture has had a God or Goddess of Hearth and Home. Therefore, we decided to research housing prices in Greenburgh from 1870 - Present. In Part I, we established our point zero at a lot size of 25 square feet x 111 square feet. In 1873, land of that size was $525 in Tarrytown. Three years later, in Dobbs Ferry, D. Ogden Bradley sold land that he owned with a similar sized lot (25 square feet x100 square feet) to William Werner for $233.
From this point forward, we will only use prices from Dobbs Ferry. We now turn our attention to the years 1900 and 1920. In 1900, Joseph Seitz sold land with a 25x100 sized lot on Blake Ave. in Dobbs Ferry to Simon Young for $2,900.
In 1920, Susan & Robert J Pond sold land with a 25x100 sized lot on Franklin Ave in Dobbs Ferry to Edith Appleton Ives for $1,000.
Thus far, we have shown the price of land in Greenburgh from 1873-1920. Next up, will be to look at modern prices. Stay tuned for updates.
