Students will interact with local, state and national leaders and learn about government during the 6 week program
SUMMER INTERNSHIP APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED
For the past fourteen summers, the Greenburgh Town Hall Summer Internship Program has engaged more than two-hundred area students in the process of learning about local government through authentic hands-on experiences ranging from working in town departments to organizing lobbying efforts, producing informational and educational campaigns regarding town wide matters of concern, researching, analyzing, writing and conducting presentations to the Town Board as well as producing videos on local government issuessuch as the environment, recycling, pedestrian safety, equality, COVID19 safety precautions and prevention, just to name a few. We are now accepting applications for the 2023 Greenburgh summer internship program. The program begins in July, lasts 6 weeks. Students meet Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 10-3.
Co-coordinated by Town Supervisor, Paul Feiner and Town Clerk, Judith A. Beville, the internship program hasf our pillars – communications, leadership development, problem-solving and teamwork – upon which activities, projects (as referred to above), guest speakers, group work and presentations are designed.
Speakers have included Town of Greenburgh officials, Department Heads, County Executive George Latimer, Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins, Assemblywoman, Mary Jane Shimsky, Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins, Former First Lady (State level) Matilda R. Cuomo and (National level) Hillary Clinton , former TODAY show host Meredith Veiera, Judith Cheng Hopkins, former Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations in charge of Refugees around the world, J.T. Rogers of Hastings who won the TONY award for the best play OSLO in 2017; and top national journalists as well as numerous other individuals representing local, state and national levels of government. The late Andre Leon Talley, an internationally known fashion journalist, also spent time meeting with the Greenburgh interns one summer. The guest speakers serve to inform our young people about issues and concerns at various levels of government and, most importantly, inspire, motivate and empower them to seek leadership roles.
Greenburgh Town Hall Summer interns have also joined forces with local, county and state officials on government issues. They have spearheaded efforts to increase local support of businesses along E. Hartsdale Avenue in 2017. They organized a lobbying effort to appeal to the State of New York, Department of Transportation to repave state roads in Greenburgh and repair potholes. Their effort led to NYS expediting the repaving of Hillside Ave and parts of Dobbs Ferry Road. In 2022, the interns appealed to the County Executive’s office to extend free bus ridership to students.
This summer the Greenburgh interns will partner with TED-Ed curriculum and will gain access to the Ted Ed curriculum. Students also have benefitted from Toastmaster’s, which provides interns with a full-day training on developing and mastering their “Elevator Pitch,” another critically important and useful speaking /presentation skill. In addition, our internship program has partnered with Xposure Schools, Inc., an after school program, once in Greenburgh and developing nationally, whose mission is to expose children, adolescents and adults to the worlds of science, technology and finance. National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Emmy Awards winning Xposure, Inc. program staff experts in media production have guided our interns with producing their video presentations.
