[ARCHIVED] Sustainable Westchester to send every resident letter advising them of opt out options

Sustainable Westchester's Dan Welsh spoke at our Town Board meeting last night and agreed to send every resident of Greenburgh who is currently enrolled in the Westchester Power ESCO a letter advising that the  ESCO prices are currently higher than Con Ed's.  Residents can opt out of the ESCO if they wish. Every resident is enrolled in the ESCO unless they opt out. 29 villages, towns and cities participate in the ESCO and residents of those communities also must opt out if they don't want to participate in the ESCO.

Around the 5th of each month I post on the town website a comparison of the Con Ed rates and the ESCO rates. We need to be transparent and to make it easy for people to decide for themselves whether they should stay in the ESCO or opt out. People also should know that the Con Ed rates could at some point between now and October 2024 be higher than the ESCO.  Con Ed rates fluctuate each month.  Some months could be higher than the ESCO. Other months they could be lower. The ESCO rates can't go up or down till October, 2024.   The ESCO also uses green energy which is good.

I think that going forward (after the contract expires in October, 2024) that  Sustainable Westchester should include in future contracts with suppliers a provision that if the Con Ed rates are substantially lower than the ESCO's for a period of time that those enrolled would get a partial refund from the ESCO to make up the difference if the future contracts require localities to enroll everyone unless they opt out.
