[ARCHIVED] Why is it taking so long to repair Mt Joy sewer and Warnke water main break

WHY IS IT TAKING SO LONG TO FIX MT. JOY?

and Warnke water main break

Our infrastructure is aging. Some of the pipes underground are a century old, or at least as old as the neighborhoods they are in. A few weeks ago a sewer line collapsed on Mt Joy area which we realize has been an inconvenience for neighbors as we have to get the work done safely. The job is being performed by an outside contractor the Town has on hand for emergency excavations, the Morano Brothers. As they have to replace pipe from one manhole to another, they have to work around all the other lines it crosses – with storm, water, sewer and gas lines in the same spot. This makes for an expensive and complicated repair.  We anticipate that the job should be completed in another month.

Another water main break on Warnke (Ardsley Road) is also very expensive and intensive.  The work had to be scheduled over the two coming school breaks in February and April since it would require the whole intersection being closed which would be too disruptive on school days. This is also a job the Morano Brothers firm is doing. This area involves three different water departments – ours, Suez and Scarsdale – as all three lines cross this project. The work will start next week with curb work on Ardsley Road. It is unknown how long the pipe repair will take as they need to determine if the job can be completed during a school break or would require the extension to summer break for more time when school is out. There is no disruption of water service for any residents.

We thank you for your patience!
