Con Ed vs Sustainable Westchester rates --a comparison

Greenburgh Residential Electricity Supply Rate Comparison - March 2022

Westchester Power vs. Con Edison

Westchester Power Program Background

The Town of Greenburgh participates in a Community Energy Program known as Westchester Power. This energy supply program is managed by the local nonprofit

Sustainable Westchester on behalf of the 29 participating municipalities in Westchester County, procuring electricity in bulk to provide low-cost fixed rates to residents.

Residents benefit from the program through a fixed price structure that provides cost control assurance on their electric supply charges. The program also empowers the county and its residents to actively work towards a vision for a healthy and sustainable future by supporting renewable energy.

March Residential Rates

Average Con Edison Standard Rate

WP 100% Renewable Fixed Rate

WP Standard Supply

5.21¢/kWh

7.41¢/kWh

6.75¢/kWh

Contract to-date Residential Rates

Average Con Edison Standard Rate

WP 100% Renewable Fixed Rate

WP Standard Supply

7.77¢/kWh

7.41¢/kWh

6.75¢/kWh

Con Edison’s supply rate dropped in March due to a negative adjustment applied to the market charge of over 6 cents. This is the first time we have seen anything like this - generally the adjustments range from -2 to +2 cents. Energy prices in the broader market remain highly elevated and we do not expect ConEd to be able to apply similar

“negative adjustments” of the magnitude applied in March. WP 100% Renewable energy remains lower than the average Con Edison rate over the contract term, the equivalent of $1.80 in savings on your bill per month (for a resident who consumes 500 kwh/month). Savings over the term on WP Standard would be a little over $5 per month.

March Hypothetical Cost Comparison

For a Greenburgh resident who consumed 500 kWh of electricity in February, that person would have been charged the following under each supply option:

Con Edison Standard Rate

WP 100% Renewable Fixed Rate

WP Standard Supply Fixed Rate

$26.05

$37.05

$33.75

In comparing the Con Edison Standard Rate to the WP fixed rates for March:

  • WP 100% Renewable cost ~$11.00 over the same usage at the Con Ed average supply rate
  • WP Standard Supply would have been ~$7.70 more than Con Ed for the month

Greenburgh Environmental Benefit To-Date

CO2 mitigated, metric tons

Equivalent: Cars driven for a year

Equivalent: Tree seedlings grown for 10 years

Options for Greenburgh Residents

The power of choice is always in the hands of the residents to decide what energy supply option is best for them, and as such, you can take the following actions as it relates to Westchester Power:

  • Want to enroll?

    • Greenburgh residents who are not currently enrolled in the program (including those who have previously opted-out of the Westchester Power electricity supply in the past) still have the ability to opt-in and participate, as the current contract price is locked in until June 30, 2022.
  • Want to change supply options?

  • For residents already participating in the program at either the 100%

Renewable or Standard Supply fixed rates, you can change your supply option at any time. Whether you want to move into the 100% Renewable supply to maximize your clean energy impact, or switch to the Standard Supply for a better financial option, the choice is yours.

  • Want to opt-out of Westchester Power altogether?

    • Residents participating in the program can opt-out at any point they wish with no hassle, penalty, or fees.

Residents who want to enroll, change their supply, or opt-out can visit the Westchester Power web page and fill out the applicable online form on the Sustainable Westchester website at https://sustainablewestchester.org/wp/energy-choices/#energychoices or call Sustainable Westchester at (914) 242-4725 for live assistance.
