Sidewalk would help students, businesses, residents walk/bike safely
The New York State Legislature passed a budget last month that contains significant dollars for local infrastructure projects. Members of the State Legislature (Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins and Assemblyman Tom Abinanti) will have great influence how the dollars are allocated.
A long standing goal of the town has been to obtain funding for a sidewalk on W Hartsdale Ave. A sidewalk would enable hundreds of people to walk safely from Solomon Schecter, Maria Regina, Woodlands HS, Poets Corner and other neighborhoods to the Hartsdale train station, to Central Ave and the Hartsdale business district.
Over the past five years the town has committed significant resources to sidewalk construction and successfully built miles of new sidewalks. We will continue to build more sidewalks around the entire town each year. The benefits: safety --reducing pedestrian fatalities. Providing safe alternatives for residents relying on mass transit. Encouraging cyclists and pedestrians to have a safe alternative to get to places of employment. And, an increase to home values--stronger viability of mixed used corridors.
We estimate that the cost of engineering, completion of the sidewalk would be around $2.3 million dollars. W Hartsdale Ave is a NYS road. This sidewalk would make an enormous quality of life difference to many residents, students and businesses.
