[ARCHIVED] Sad news--the passing of Nancy Larrabee of the Greenburgh Library

Nancy's passing is devastating news to everyone who loves the Greenburgh Library. She will be missed. She was an exceptionally dedicated and caring public servant.

Very sad news. Nancy Larrabee of the Greenburgh Library passed away on May 1. Those who love the library will be heartbroken over this sad news. Nancy was a major reason why so many people feel so good about the Greenburgh Library. She cared. She was hard working, personable, dedicated to patrons and always did more than anyone expected --helping everyone who had questions or needed assistance. She was an amazing employee and public servant.  I'm sharing this sad news because she touched the lives of thousands of  people who appreciate the Greenburgh Library.

The following is her obituary.

Nancy L. Larrabee, a long-time resident of Tarrytown, New York, died on May 1, 2021, with family by her side, after a courageous struggle with an aggressive form of cancer. She was born on October 12, 1970, in New Rochelle, New York, the daughter of Leonard P. Larrabee, Jr. and the late Judith (Tracy) Larrabee.

She was a graduate of the Ursuline School in New Rochelle and Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY, and earned a Master’s degree in library science from Simmons University in Boston. She then began a 27-year career as a librarian at the Greenburgh Public Library, which continued until her illness. During her time at the library, Nancy held a variety of roles, most recently providing services to Greenburgh’s seniors. She was a familiar face for patrons and enjoyed sharing her knowledge, love of reading, and interests in geneaology and local history.

Nancy was very close to and treasured her time with her extended family. She was particularly devoted to her many nieces and nephews, rooting them on at countless youth sporting events throughout the years, collaborating on arts and crafts projects with them and otherwise sharing in their lives. She especially doted on her devoted dog Rudy and logged many miles of walks with him on trails in and around Tarrytown. Nancy also truly valued the many friendships she made with work colleagues and Tarrytown neighbors over the years.

One of Nancy’s many interests was painting. Over the years, she enjoyed trying different mediums, but found her niche in acrylics. Her love of the Maine coast was especially reflected in her wonderfully bright and colorful paintings. Nancy always looked forward to spending time at her family’s long-time cottage on Bustins Island, Maine, which she visited annually over her entire life.

Nancy was predeceased by her mother Judith. In addition to her loving father, Leonard, of Falmouth, ME, she is survived by her devoted sisters and brothers: Judith Hayes (husband William) of Yarmouth, ME; Elizabeth Larrabee (husband John Riley) of Walnut Creek, CA; Leonard Larrabee (wife Susan) of Bedford, NY; David Larrabee (wife Kathleen) of Keswick, VA; and Jacqueline Bohan (husband Thomas) of Yonkers, NY; as well as her five nephews and five nieces.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 5th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dwyer & Michael’s funeral home located at 90 North Broadway in Tarrytown. Nancy was a communicant of the Church of the Transfiguration in Tarrytown and there will be a Mass of Christian Burial at that church on Thursday, May 6th at 10:30 a.m. Masks are required. Burial will be at the family plot at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yarmouth, ME.
