The Greenburgh Town Board unanimously approved a resolution last night setting a public hearing for Wednesday, May 23rd at 7:15 PM at Greenburgh Town Hall to provide volunteer firefighters/ambulance corp workers who serve an all volunteer fire/ambulance corp district with partial property tax exemptions.
All approved applicants will receive a 10% exemption not only on the town portion of the town tax but unlike other exemptions, the persons eligible for this exemption will receive this 10% exemption on most special districts (water, fire and park). For the typical resident of a village the tax exemption will be $10.32. For the typical resident of the unincorporated section of Greenburgh the tax exemption wll be $181.13 (based on an average assessed value of $15,000).
The NY State Legislature approved legislation authorizing municipalities to approve this exemption. The State Legislation only applies to all volunteer depts. The amount of the exemption was set by the State Legislature.
In recent years federal, state and local officials have tried to provide assistance to volunteer fire departments and ambulance corps. It's getting harder and harder to attract and keep volunteers. These volunteers are on call 24 hours a day, save the taxpayers millions of dollars.
