NYS STUDYING WHETHER LEFT TURN SIGNAL ON UNDERHILL AND CENTRAL COULD BE INSTALLED
Release Date: January 21, 2018

In recent years the Greenburgh Police department and I have been pushing New York State to install a left turn signal on Underhill and Central Ave. We feel that this would be a quality of life enhancement for many motorists and increase safety.

I sent the Regional Director a letter seeking an update and received the following response. Seems like NYS will conclude their study at the end of next month.

Dear  Supervisor Feiner:

Thank you for your correspondence concerning the intersection of Route 100 (Central Avenue) with Underhill Road and Old Army Road in the town of Greenburgh, Westchester County. As youreference in your letter, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has a study underway to determine whether a left-turn signal phase for the side roads would improve the operation of the traffic signal at this intersection.  As part of this study, NYSDOT is also evaluating whether the existing traffic signal equipment can physically support the signal equipment that would be needed should the decision be made to install left-turn signal indications for the side road approaches.

In your letter, you request an update on the status of our studyThe analysis of the accident history and the signal equipment is ongoing.  Our Traffic Safety & Mobility office was not able to do a field review of the intersection before the holidays. Now that school is back in session at Edgemont High School and the traffic volumes are returning to a normal state (not impacted by holiday traffic), NYSDOT will conduct fieldreviews to analyze the operation of the signalized intersection during morning and afternoon hours. It is anticipated that the study will be completed by the end of February 2018.

If you have any further questions concerning this review, please feel free to contact Adam Levine, our Regional Traffic Safety and Mobility Engineer, at (845) 437-3396.

Sincerely,

Lance C. MacMillan, P.E.
